INHERIT at Scotland's Land & Economy Conference, 2 October 2019

Updated: Oct 6, 2020

On 2nd October 2019 INHERIT Director Dr Chris Dalglish participated in a panel discussion at Scotland's Land & Economy Conference. The event was held at Dynamic Earth, Edinburgh and was organised by the Scottish Land Commission.

The panel was chaired by Scottish Land Commissioner Megan Macinnes and included, in addition to Chris, Professor Dieter Helm of Oxford University and Professor Deb Roberts of the James Hutton Institute.

The question the panel asked was “How can Scotland's land rights and responsibilities framework help to address the big challenges and trends ahead, such as climate change and rising inequality?” Chris’ answer focused on the concepts of environmental, climate and conservation justice.

He said '[....] for me, the value of the land rights and responsibilities framework [...] is the human rights approach that it takes to decisions around land as we try to address these big challenges. It brings environmental and humanitarian concerns into the same frame so they can be dealt with at the same time and together, rather than separating them out and it provides us with some clear, quite concrete direction in terms of who should be involved in decisions around land and which interests and consequences should be taken into account'.

Videos of all sessions of the conference are available here.
