INHERIT and MedINA are pleased to announce the Knowledge Café “When conservation goes wrong. Is conservation always compatible with human rights?” which is being organised as part of the forthcoming ‘Communities, Conservation and Livelihoods’ conference (28th-30th May, Halifax, Canada). This international conference is co-hosted by the Community Conservation Research Network (CCRN) and the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN).
The conference offers a unique opportunity to highlight how local communities around the world are engaging in environmental conservation that supports sustainable livelihoods, and how they can be best supported in policy and in practical programmes.
The Knowledge Café will bring together experts from different fields for an open and creative conversation. Through this Café session, we aim to open a discussion about current conservation practice and how it might be adjusted, so as to positively contribute to the improvement of the livelihoods of people in protected areas with respect to human rights. The Café will provide an opportunity to deepen our collective understanding of the subject and to shed light on those issues that need to be further explored.
Knowledge Café participants will reflect on the IUCN criteria and tools and how they relate to the issues above: Are these criteria and tools still fully fit for purpose? Have they become overcomplicated, disengaged from people’s ways-of-life? Are they inadvertently causing harm or ignoring issues of great significance to local interests? Can they be improved and, if so, in what ways?
