The Institute for Heritage & Sustainable Human Development

Building better lives through heritage

Inherit is the York Archaeological Trust's institute for research, policy advocacy and development practice.

We believe that cultural heritage has a vital role to play in addressing humanitarian and environmental problems. Cultural heritage shapes who we are and how we see the world, our institutions and our ways of life. It is a resource that people can use to make their voices heard and to develop their communities and places.

Inherit supports people to use their cultural heritage to improve their lives and the places they live. We work with communities, other non-profit organisations, public bodies and experts around Europe, the Mediterranean and Asia.
