The Institute for Heritage & Sustainable Human Development
Building better lives through heritage
Inherit is the York Archaeological Trust's institute for heritage research, policy advocacy and community development. The institute was established by the Trust in 2017 to further its charitable mission of building better lives through heritage.
Cultural heritage is a collective and living inheritance. It shapes who we are and how we see the world. It shapes our institutions, our places, our environment and our ways of life. Cultural heritage is diverse – as diverse as people are.
We believe that cultural heritage has a vital role to play in delivering just and sustainable solutions to humanitarian and environmental challenges. It is a resource that people can use as they strive to make their voices heard, to overcome marginalisation and to develop their communities and places. Heritage can also be problematic, presenting barriers to development that need to be overcome.
Inherit supports people to use their heritage to improve their lives and the places they live. We always work with others, bringing our particular expertise and experience to collaborations with communities, other non-profit organisations, public bodies and experts in many different fields.
