Building better lives through heritage
Inherit is a part of charity the York Archaeological Trust. The Trust aims to build better lives through heritage. This means helping people to realise the social, economic and environmental value of cultural heritage. At Inherit, we contribute to this effort through our applied research, policy advocacy and community development programmes.
In a just society, all people are able to meet their needs and live within a flourishing environment. We believe that cultural heritage has a vital role to play in realising sustainable communities and societies, and in delivering solutions to humanitarian and environmental challenges.
Through our work, we support people to empower themselves and to bring about positive change. Cultural heritage is a collective and living inheritance. It shapes who we are and how we see the world. It shapes our institutions, our places, our environment and our ways of life. Cultural heritage is diverse – as diverse as people are. It is a resource that people can use as they strive to promote their voices, overcome marginalisation and develop their communities and places. Heritage can also be problematic, presenting barriers to development that need to be overcome.
We work with others, bringing our particular expertise and experience to collaborations with communities, other non-profit organisations, public bodies and experts in many different fields. We work across Europe, the Middle East and North Africa.
